Brumation Location
Brumation (hibernation) time has come for many tortoises. The best place for your tortoise to brumate is outside in its burrow. It will be snug, cool, and just slightly damp, ideal brumation conditions. You may feel you need to bring your dear one inside to keep it safe and warm – warmth is not what a brumating tortoise needs. Inside, a tortoise will lose precious moisture and, because the temperature inside is not cold enough--between 35 and 50 degrees F, it will burn valuable fat unnecessarily and could die. A desert tortoise needs desert conditions, summer and winter. If you are moving or your tortoise cannot brumate outside for some other reason such as the burrow flooded or collapsed, please refer to Information Sheet #15, An Alternative Location for Brumation When an Outdoor Burrow Is Not Available.
